More than just your average college club...

The University of Rhode Island Emergency Medical Service is not just for people who have interest in medicine. In fact, many of our members come from different backgrounds and majors. These include: Accounting, Business Management, Communicative Studies, Engineering and Computer Science to name just a few. Our members all share a genuine concern for the campus family and want to help others in need. Many of our members start with our service having nothing more than an interest in volunteering their time. Many of them later go on to take educational classes in Emergency Medicine and become Licensed Emergency Medical Technicians. After graduating, these members find that employers desire the skills acquired from working in this field. These skills include the ability to manage a team, critical thinking skills, working in difficult situations and being able to relate to others. Our members learn these skills by working emergency calls both on campus and by responding to the nearby community to assist the South Kingstown Emergency Medical Service during major incidents. We also work closely with the Kingston Fire Department who provide rescue services such as vehicle extrication, confined space rescues and Hazardous Materials containment. Many employers look for the ability to work with outside agencies to accomplish the job at hand. The opportunities in volunteering with our services are almost limitless and can give you exposure to experiences that will enhance your college experience.

How you can become involved...

Anyone affiliated with URI or the community can become a member of URIEMS. Our volunteers come from a wide diversity of college majors and backgrounds, and there is no emergency medical experience necessary, as we will train you. All new members undergo a ninety day probationary period, during which you are trained in the operations of our service and are required to become certified in CPR and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator. You will ride with teams on actual calls, complete a training checklist and participate in all Corps activities. Upon completion of your Probationary period, you will be reviewed by the Executive Board and granted full membership status. Once you have become a General Member, you may choose to become more involved by helping out committees or taking a Chairperson or Command position. Each year we elect members to oversee aspects of our operation by heading committees or holding administrative positions as Commanders who have the responsibility of managing the direction of the Corps.
